1859 Gilkey Hotel coat rack

. Welcome to the Terwilliger Home. We will go upstairs to start our tour and feel free to hang your coat on the coat rack llocated in the upstairs hallway. This coat rack was originally located in the 1859 Gilkey Hotel in Council Grove.

Upstairs Bathroom

Taking a quick peek into the upstairs bathroom we can see a Commode on display with the necesary tools to bathe your whole body and wash your hands. A sign to the left tells us how it was done. It explains how a Commode also housed the " pot" that they used instead of our modern day stool.

Upstairs Bedroom

This 1870s bedroom has many historic items on display such as a wash stand with a side towel rod that pulled out to the side to hang the hand towel on.

Stairway to Main Floor

We will use the original stairway located in the 1871 Terwilliger South addition to take us to the main room Parlor..

Stained Glass Window

As we enter the Parlor notice the lovely stained glass window which was placed there in 1907.

The Parlor is the most splendid room in the home with Victorian decor and a beautiful mohogany fireplace front that we hope you will come to see for yourself.

Cellar Dinning Room

This room was the original kitchen. It had a hard packed dirt floor and a beadboard ceiling. You can still see remnants of black soot on the East wall where the fireplace was located.

Cellar Bathroom

Here we see the cellar bathroom with an old Victorian era mirror and shelves . The shelves are holding oil lamps that were used to light homes before electricity. Old family pictures line the walls of this room.
